Every body has a story. Massy Arias' insanely sculpted body is a story of strength, but also the stamina that helps her overcome the odds and become an Instagram-famous fitness guru with millions of followers – 2.6 million and more – including celebrity Stans SZA and Chris Hemsworth.
Even their facts tell stories. "I have a Koi on my right side that goes upstream, which means I've been through a difficult time, but I'm still through," says Arias, pointing to the intricate fish ink next to her sculpted six-pack. "The lady on my shoulder? This is my mother who looks over my heart. "
Formerly known as MankoFit on social media, Arias has built an impressive work that includes a CoverGirl referral, a fabletics collection, a supplement line, a workbook in progress, and a brand new fitness app aka Empowered by Massy Arias, who was launched in October with a 30-day challenge launch. All this before she reaches 30. It's hard to believe that Arias could not do a push-up seven years ago.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Massiel Indhira Arias moved to the United States at the age of 14. "I'm from the Caribbean and in the Latino world, boys do things, girls do things," she says. "My parents never encouraged me to exercise. I did ballet. "But Arias developed a 'physical asthma' that forced her to hang up her pointe shoes.
Fast forward to her late teens. "I lived very unhealthily back then. Celebrate, drink, smoke cigarettes; I'm in the wrong amount, "she recalls. The hits came on. "My brother was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma," an unusual but aggressive cancer. "I was in an offensive relationship where I let myself be devalued. When I broke up with him, I realized what am I doing with my life? "
Arias was 23 and deeply depressed. "I did not even want a shower, I stopped going to the nursing school, I just lived in my room for eight months." Her gum disappeared, her hair fell out. "I lost so much weight that I can see my ribcage could, "she says." My body literally ate. "
She tried just about everything-herbal therapy, cognitive therapy, hypnosis-to fight her depression, to no avail. Every route except one. "Fitness has saved my life," she says. A friend encouraged her to go to the gym. She started with the elliptical trainer, went outside and got more sun and got to know new people. And then she spotted Jamie Eason's 12-week program on bodybuilding.com. "She had the same haircut as me, like a bob, and she looked so amazing and strong!" Says Arias. "I was obsessed with not being that weak, skinny girl run over by a guy – or by life."
The program was advertised as a beginner's training, "but it was totally unrealistic for someone who had absolutely no nuclear power," she says. "I could not even lift five pounds of dumbbells for three repetitions!"
Arias considered it a challenge and gradually increased her muscle stability. "The first push-up felt great!" Arias shared her advances and routines in the social media. She never thought of turning her passion into a career, but when people started asking for advice, she decided to get certified. Just as Jamie Eason has motivated her, Arias now pays millions of women from all walks of life – known as MA Warriors – with guided workouts and personalized menus in her new app. Her training style includes strength training, strength training, yoga and HIIT. Your body-positive message promotes the maintenance of a healthy balance.
An important milestone that has made her a better coach: the birth of Indira Sarai, her 2-year-old daughter with her husband / business partner Stefan Williams, who was also jacked up. (Already in September 2016, Arias made headlines for publishing a six-pack selfie – getting pregnant in the fourth month.) "My daughter has made me more sensitive to the people I train," she says. "I'm not bulletproof, but I feel like a tough cookie and I understand that most people are not like that, when I have this tiny little person who is so selfless and so innocent, I've learned to be more patient and continue to see the good in people.
"My mantra has always been: Be your best version and keep making progress." Arias is still in work, as is the peacock tattoo on the inside of her arm. "I have not finished yet because it hurts a lot," she says with a contagious laugh. "But that reminds me how beautiful and powerful I am."
