Everyone in my family loved sports and I learned basketball at a young age. I was lucky enough to grow up with an older brother [Errick McCollum plays in the VTB United League abroad] who had to take me everywhere. I worked with him on my game from an early age. We have pushed each other to get better since we were younger. That still applies today.
Strengthen your fitness
I always want to make sure that I do everything in my power to do my job well and to help my team succeed. During the season, I work with my teammates and my team's health and performance staff to ensure that my training and nutrition are as effective as possible off the field. In my spare time, I spent additional hours in the gym, recording and continuously working on my game. I also invest time in relaxation – yoga, massages, steam bath and the use of hot and cold tubs.
Focus on relaxation
I believe in hard work, but I also believe in balance, and for me it comes in the form of calm. Recovery is an essential part of being willing to do my job at the highest level. In addition to cryotherapy and other relaxation techniques, I was introduced to Cherrish cherry juice last season and was instantly taken with its anti-inflammatory properties. One of the biggest benefits I've seen so far is a good night's sleep and a refreshed wake up. It is another part of my recovery toolbox.
I realize that my platform enables me to serve others and this is a privilege that I take very seriously. Two of my biggest platforms are the Press Pass program and the CJ McCollum Dream Centers. The Press Pass program is a mentoring program that enables local Portland High School students to gain journalism experience. I also work with the Portland Boys & Girls Clubs on the CJ McCollum Dream Centers, an initiative that enables us to provide youths from underserved communities with safe spaces to learn, explore, shape and grow.
Cherrish is available on cherrish.net and amazon.com.
